Nvidia Titan X (Pascal) Review

Conclusion

The new, Pascal-based Titan X is without doubt the new graphics king. Every generation, this appears to come at a heavier and heavier cost and, with the Titan X now costing over £1,000, Nvidia's bold pricing here will surely seem like a joke to anyone at all concerned with price-performance. What you have to remember, however, is that's not everyone. This isn't a volume market, but there are clearly enough people willing to pay this level of money to have the best hardware available for it to be worth it on Nvidia's part – something that is also reflected in other areas of the market like SSDs, CPUs and motherboards. Given that there's also zero competition at the moment, Nvidia's only real limit on pricing is what it thinks this particular market segment will take.

The new Titan X achieves truly enjoyable and playable frame rates at 4K with all or nearly all of the details at maximum, and is really the first card to do so, although the GTX 1080 does cope well too. It will be interesting to see what a GTX 1080 Ti, assuming Nvidia launches one, brings to the table as well.

This card is what pretty much any enthusiast dreams of owning at the moment, but that's not to say it's flawless. It's a minor thing, but the GeForce GTX branding on the card seems at odds with the product name and frankly a bit lazy. The cooler, meanwhile, lacks modern features like semi-passive cooling and RGB LEDs (not everyone's cup of tea, we know, but still), but the main gripe is that it doesn't effectively tame this GPU and actually limits it. On the flip side, that does potentially provide buyers with the motivation to water-cool it, and while usually the cost of doing so is prohibitive, that's unlikely to be the case when you've already dropped £1,100 on the card alone. We're certainly excited to see what the Titan X can do in that situation – stay tuned.
